After graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently witnessing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University 1971-75) I'm a believer in education that integrates study of the arts alongside study of different subjects. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist with a PhD and MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. The program in ethnomusicology that I joined in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music at a College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have several passions. I enjoy looking at the larger view. I love teaching undergraduates (majors and non-majors), which is why I've written three books - Music in India A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. My teaching schedule will then alternate between periods of primarily academic tasks and periods of administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-1998, Chair of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of the Department of Music).
